Volunteer

You do not need a car, a big budget or years of experience to help someone drive on their own. You need a few hours, a skill you are good at and the willingness to show up.

The people you never see

Picture a learner on her first solo drive. She turns the key, checks the mirror and pulls out of the driveway while her family watches from the gate.

What you do not see are the people who helped her get there. Someone set up the awareness event where her family first heard that adaptive driving was possible. Someone translated a guide into Hindi so her parents could read it. Someone wrote down her story so the next learner would find the courage to call.

Any of those people could be a volunteer. A student, a freelancer or a working professional with a few hours to spare could do each of those things, and those hours add up to real change in someone’s life. You can read about the learners behind that change in Real Life, Real Change.

What you give, and what you take away

Volunteering is not one-sided. The time you give comes back to you in ways a classroom or a regular job rarely offers.

You give

  • A few hours a week or a month
  • A skill you already have
  • Your curiosity and care

You take away

  • Real work you can talk about in college applications and job interviews
  • A first-hand understanding of disability and inclusion
  • Practice in research, writing, design or event planning
  • Friends and mentors who care about the same things you do

Many colleges value social work and community service, so check whether your hours can count towards your course. And if you plan a career in business, policy, design or social work, understanding disability inclusion is a skill employers increasingly look for.

Part of something bigger

Helping one person drive on their own may feel like a small thing. It connects to much larger goals. Independent mobility supports several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It also links to India's Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and to the social side of how companies now report on their responsibilities.

Read how our work connects to these goals, to disclosure frameworks and to ESG in our story on mobility, inclusion and the SDGs.
